Liam stood in the middle of his mother's meticulously kept garden, the scent of roses heavy in the air. The discovery of the list, hidden in a gardening journal, had been a surprising, gentle blow. "Grow a prize-winning dahlia" was the first item. He understood.

He felt the sun on his face, warm and comforting. He had inherited his mother's gardening tools, their handles worn smooth with use. He knelt and gently touched a velvety petal. He decided to begin, taking things one step at a time.
